Ontario Cup U12 Girls In Ottawa

Ontario Cup U12 girls’ basketball championship tournament: Highlighting young girls in sport

The U12 girls competing in the Ontario Basketball Association will host their Ontario Cup in Ottawa on April 11-13. The tournament will host seven divisions across five locations and is presented by Basketball Ontario and hosted by EOBA, a collective of Ottawa basketball clubs.

Ottawa Tourism is an important sponsor for this event. In addition to gyms, thousands of players, coaches, officials, and supporters will enliven local restaurants and hotels and enjoy the sights of the capital.

Aside from an Ontario Cup being an exciting event in a young girl’s life, it is important to showcase the talent and skill that these girls encompass. With the huge growth of women’s sports in the last few years, the time to be a young female athlete is now! The WNBA is expanding three teams within the next two years, with one in Toronto. There are also a few other professional women’s basketball leagues that have been founded within the last few years, including Hoop Queens, the first professional women’s basketball league in Canada, and Unrivalled, a 3×3 basketball league that recently finished up its inaugural season.

Turning basketball events into a mentorship platform is a goal of the Ottawa Basketball Network, a non-profit helping to run operations for the Ontario Cup.

“Let’s take something youth love, basketball, and let them do it in deliberate ways that build essential skills and confidence,” said Leo Doyle, the founder of Ottawa Basketball Network. “Scaling-up basketball builds community, people, and relationships.”

“We’d love for the City of Ottawa to do more to support basketball. Hosting events such as the Ontario Cup helps us to get attention. And we’re delighted that city officials are starting to notice,” continued Doyle. “We think an annual tournament, like a basketball version of the ‘Bell Capital Cup’ of hockey, would be a winner. But we need to create some indoor, multi-court spaces for that to be manageable and impactful for the city’s sport tourism goals.”

In this upcoming tournament, the division one and two teams will compete at Algonquin College. Across from Algonquin College is College Square, which includes several possible places to eat, including Crumbl Cookies, Osmows, Chances R restaurant, and a Loblaws.

The division three and four teams will play at Longfields-Davidsons Heights Secondary School. Longfields-Davidsom Heights Secondary School is located in the neighbourhood of Barrhaven, and nearby Kelsey’s Original Roadhouse, Shawarma Heaven, and a Starbucks.

The division five teams will play at AY Jackson Secondary School in Kanata. AY Jackson Secondary School is nearby Burrito Xpress, My Thai Village and Buster’s Bar and Grill.

The division six teams will play at the Confederation Education Centre. Confederation Education Centre is located in Nepean and is nearby Mexicali Rosa’s and an A&W.

The division seven teams will play at Brookfield High School, which is located in Riverside Park and is nearby Ottawa’s Bank St. and Lansdowne Park.
